Game Awards: Liveblog

The Game Awards are an annual event held in Los Angeles. Hosted by the event’s creator Geoff Keighley the ceremony features announcements, trailers and awards. The awards are live streamed globally from America to China to Ireland every year. The 2016 ceremony had a viewership of 3.8 million at its peak as well as special guests including Mick Gordon the composer of the award-winning soundtrack to DOOM and famous Japanese developer Hideo Kojima the recipient of the 2016 Industry Icon Award. Awards in twenty-eight categories including Game of the Year (GOTY) are voted on by fans as well as industry companies and media influencers.

The pre-show starts with several trailers and announcements to be made.

World War Z announced based on Max Brooks’ award-winning book of the same name.

Streamer Dr. Disrespekt wins the new Trending Gamer award.

VR game Vacation Simulator from Owlchemy Labs is announced.

Best Score is awarded to Nier Automata from Japanese developer PlatinumGames.

The frankly insane VR game Accounting+ from CROWS CROWS CROWS is announced.

The new project from Dark Souls developer FROMSOFTWARE is teased. Possibly a sequel to Bloodborne?

The Game Awards begin with a performance from the Game Awards Orchestra with music from Cuphead to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The award for Best Narrative goes to What Remains of Edith Finch with Horizon: Zero Dawn, Wolfestein II: The New Colossus, and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice among the other nominees.

The developers of Firewatch, Campo Santo, announce their new game In the Valley of Gods a walking simulator set in early 20th Century Egypt.

Zachary Levi announces the award for Best Action Game with the nominations including Nioh, Wolfenstein II, Destiny 2, Prey and Cuphead nominated.

Community made Warframe trailers are shown along with ads for the Playstation Store sale, the new GTA V heist and the Nintendo Switch.

Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima present the trailer for del Toro’s newest film The Shape of Water and present the award for Best Art Direction. The nominees include Cuphead, Destiny 2, Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn and The Legend of Zelda: BOTW with Cuphead winning.

The DLC for The Legend of Zelda: BOTW, The Champions Ballad is announced.

Soul Calibur VI is announced.

Persona 5 wins Best Role-Playing Game. Mario and Rabbids wins Best Strategy Game. The Last of Us Part II wins Most Anticipated Game. Super Mario: Odyssey wins Best family Game.

Cloud 9 win Best E-Sports Team.

Aisha Tyler presents the award for Best Debut Indie game with nominees including Cuphead, Golf Story, Hollow Knight, Mr Shifty and Slime Rancher. Fan voting determines that Cuphead wins.

The Game Awards Orchestra perform a medley of chosen songs over a compilation video entitled: The Year in Gaming.

Geoff Keighley presents the Game of the Year Award to Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi for The Legend of Zelda: BOTW.

The orchestra closes out with music from Breath of the Wild.
